Frequently Asked Questions
Do you offer written summaries or letters?
For 30- and 60-minute sessions, yes. I include a personalized summary you can share with your provider or keep for your records. The 15-minute “Ask Me Now” sessions are more informal and don’t include a written follow-up.
Can I book for a couple or as a family?
Yes! Genetic counseling often involves partners or loved ones. You’re welcome to attend together just let me know who will be joining so I can plan accordingly. The 30- or 60-minute sessions work best for couples or more complex conversations.
Is this covered by insurance?
I operate as an out-of-network, self-pay service which means I don’t bill insurance directly. Some clients choose to submit for reimbursement using their receipt. If that’s something you’d like to try, I can provide a detailed invoice (superbill).
Do I need a referral or doctor’s order?
Nope! You can book directly. While some clients come to me through their OB-GYN or fertility clinic, many reach out on their own. I’m here to help you make sense of results or next steps, no matter where you are in your care journey.
What if I’m not sure what kind of session I need?
Start with what feels manageable. You can always begin with a 15-minute session, and if we need more time, we’ll talk about that together. No pressure, no wrong door.
Will you help me understand my test results?
Absolutely. Whether it’s a result you weren’t expecting, a lab report full of confusing terms, or just something that’s been weighing on your mind I’ll walk you through what it means in plain language. You’ll leave with clarity and a sense of what to do next.
Do you work with specific labs or fertility clinics?
I’m familiar with all the major labs, including Natera, Myriad, Quest, and BillionToOne, and often help clients interpret their results from those sources. I’m also happy to collaborate with your OB-GYN, REI, or midwife if helpful we’re all on the same team.
What is genetic counseling, and how do I know if I need it?
Genetic counseling is a personalized session where we talk through your medical and family history to better understand how genetics may impact your health or pregnancy. Think of it as a guided conversation equal parts education, support, and decision-making help. You might benefit from a session if you’ve had testing (like NIPS or carrier screening), are planning a pregnancy, are currently pregnant, or just want clearer answers about your genetic risks.
What’s the difference between the 15-, 30-, and 60-minute sessions?
Great question.
• 15-minute “Ask Me Now” sessions are for quick questions reviewing a test result, double-checking what your provider said, or deciding if further testing is right for you. I’m often available the same day.
• 30-minute sessions allow us to go deeper into your personal or pregnancy history and testing options. This is a good fit for most first-time consults.
• 60-minute sessions are best if you have a complex history, need support reviewing multiple test results, or just want plenty of space to talk things through without feeling rushed.
Is this secure and HIPAA-compliant?
Yes. I use a secure video platform and HIPAA-compliant scheduling and communication tools, so your information stays protected. You’re also welcome to ask about how your data is stored or shared transparency is part of feeling supported.
