You just got a genetic result that caught you off guard—and now you’re wondering how to bring it up with your provider. Here’s a simple way to feel more confident in that conversation.

Step 1: Bring a printed copy of your result (if possible). Highlight any terms or sections that confused you or feel important.

Step 2: Try starting with: “I got these results from my screening test, and I’d like to talk about what it might mean for my pregnancy.” You don’t need to have the perfect language.

Step 3: Ask direct but respectful questions, like:

  • “Do you recommend any follow-up testing?”

  • “Should I meet with a genetic counselor?”

  • “Is this something we can monitor by ultrasound?”

Step 4: If your provider brushes it off and you still have questions, that’s a sign it’s time to bring in a specialist. Trust your gut.

Self-advocacy isn’t about being pushy—it’s about being an informed and active part of your care team. And if you ever want to rehearse the conversation or get clarity first, I’m here for that too.
